Transparency Weaving Experimentation
Project type
Handwoven on a floor loom
Date
May 2024
Location
Madison, WI
This handwoven piece comes from my Design Studies 429
Textile Design: Weaving II course and our project prompt was to experiment and weave a transparent textile. I have always been interested in lacemaking and wanted to experiment with recreating a lacey design effect on the floor looms. During my research, I discovered hand-controlled loom techniques and incorporated mostly the Spanish lace technique into my experiments. I played with material, first starting with chunkier yarns then thinner yarns, weaving the sides tighter or looser, and making the lace motifs longer or shorter. Wanting to make this project utilitarian, I turned my transparent textile into a beautiful headwrap that looks lovely on sunny, summery days!
