The UW-Madison School of Human Ecology Textile and Fashion Design (TFD) 2024 Showcase features the work of upper-level TFD undergraduates. Each student curates their own space creating a mini-exhibition of their strongest studio works. Pieces range from garments to woven, embellished textiles, dyed and printed yardage, to three-dimensional work, and digital and printed portfolios. This exhibition celebrates the breadth and strength of creative exploration in the Textile and Fashion Design program. This showcase is co-sponsored by the School of Human Ecology Design Studies Department.
For my collection, I created a small collection exploring my Hmong heritage, culture, and childhood. At the beginning of my journey as a TFD student, I always thought my passion for creating and designing fashion and textiles would never burn out. Coming into this semester, I felt like my tank had been completely emptied, leaving me struggling with the motivation to create in class. I was in a mental and creative block. This period made me think critically about why I love doing what I do. Eventually, all the answers came back to my mother and the memories I hold of her teaching me how to sew, embroider, knit, and more. It further led me to realize how important our traditional Hmong clothes are and our deep connection with cloth and thread because of our background. It led me to re-discover and research my culture, the melting of being Hmong and American, and my childhood. Creating these garments became a tool for healing and shedding light on a part of my identity I always kept hidden.
